This is intended to be a Calvin & Hobbes inspired comic strip that takes a comical (and slightly exaggerated) look at gay issues through the eyes of smarter-than-they-should-be kids. The intent is for the strip to be a tongue in cheek look at all kinds of life issues, not just gay ones, that kids face growing up in the world but the three central kids will be gay. At the time of this post the kids are meant to be growing up somewhere in a Midwestern suburb, be witty beyond their years and not meant to be nearly as offensive as South Park (PG or PG-13 is as bad as I want to go). Hope to bring in a new black and white strip each week...and (if I can) a full color large one at the beginning of each month...right now I am character designing and writing...wish me luck!

Note: I want the posts to display oldest to newest as the strips will sometimes have continuity and its better to read older ones first - in order to do that - I have to manually change the dates of the posts so they display how I want them - at least - that's what I found - so don't pay attention to the post dates - if someone knows a better way - please let me know - thanks! I'll put the real post date someplace...

And Little Rainbow Comics pays tribute to Matthew Shepard 12/01/1976 - 10/12/1998 - its been so long I had to read up on the case and it was more disturbing than I could recall. Please say a prayer for him and all the GLBT community who have been and/or continue to be the subject of violence around the world.

Part of the mission of Little Rainbow Comics is to help educate the community at large on what it is like to grow up gay. I hope to get people thinking about what it is like to be a young kid growing up with the dilemma of being homosexual and the hardship of reconciling that with parents, friends, teachers, religion...as if growing up wasn't hard enough!

Gay issues are a lot for a young mind to tackle and it can be easy to forget the kind of damage messages of hate, intolerance and damnation can do, not only to GLBT youth but it could also justify violent actions in the minds of bullies that would prey on the GLBT community.

The Struggle Continues...

Wow - I guess if we Californians can't vote for same-sex marriage then I guess I shouldn't be surprised about Maine. It is sad when the majority can take rights away from a minority.

But when the only defense people have against same sex unions is that 'it goes against tradition' or some theological based reasoning - I just have to shake my head in disbelief. If you look at the history of Christianity (or any religion for that matter)- it ain't all its cracked up to be. Look close and you will find more than a fair share of treachery, murder and lies.

The GLBT community is asking for 'civil marriage' nothing else. Your pedophilic priests can marry you if you want (Sorry Father Geoff!). Separation of church and state is supposed to exist so I'm not sure why this is even happening. Same sex marriage is legal in other countries and they seem to be doing all right yet for some reason US citizens won't allow it to happen.

I'm not even a big fan of marriage in general - divorce rates being what they are - the heterosexual population is doing just fine in 'destroying the sanctity of marriage' all by themselves. What is important is the benefits that marriage gives to couples and if two consenting adults wish to enter into a civil contract to have those benefits, why the HELL NOT?

And to all the people out there who say 'We voted on it, get over it!' - if the situation were reversed would you let people walk all over you?

We will continue to fight so get ready to rumble, baby!

This is of course in response to what happened out in Maine this week. I had planned an actual strip but felt it better to vent my disappointment. With practically a split vote you'd think that would be enough to let Maine keep same sex marriage - sigh.

I will also be taking a break from the strip so I hope my fans will be patient with me! Earlier in the year I had vowed to get some artwork done and up for sale in time for the Holidays so with time being in short supply something has to suffer, unfortunately.

Right now the plan is to resume the strip the first week of December, if not sooner - so I hope you will come back and I will have some new art to showcase!

I have a regular office job, which I do like but art is my passion and I am in need of extra money these days. Rather than getting a seasonal job or a better paying full time job I thought to myself 'Why not focus on getting some paintings online to sell?'

So here goes - I am taking another step towards a dream - don't worry - I will definitely continue the strip as I believe it is a new, unique idea that hasn't been explored but until I am a full time artist - I need to budget my time!

Happy New Year to my fans and followers alike - thank you for your patience! The Holidays were a bit more hectic than I'd have liked but I had a good time - I hope you did too.

I plan to resume LRC next week so cross your fingers! I hope the new decade starts well for you and those close to you - chase those dreams - but better yet - plan for them - and even better - work on them!

Hey guys: I hit a snag when I started working on the strip - one of the guys I've been working with for a few years called and said 'I'm going to make a presentation at the end of the month' - meaning - he's going to present our cartoon ideas to some Hollywood types - so I'm like - Oh, I better work on that!

So the strip will be delayed yet again - see - I also got a new job over the Holidays so now I'm working full time again - which means zero creative time - sigh -what's a starving artist with a lot of student loans to do?

Hopefully it will mean great opportunities!

In the meantime - I'm excited to see Ru Paul's Drag Race launch it's second season in February!

Hey guys - my few loyal fans - well it's been even LONGER since I've been back.

When I started the strip back in Sep 2009 I was only working part-time. I had a bit more freedom to be creative. Since Dec 2009 (when I took a hiatus) I have more of a full time 8 to 5 type commitment so unfortunately something had to suffer - but not my TV watching that's for sure...

So that Drag Race season 2 was a suckfest - I did watch it but Season 1 was so much better - this season was a bit of a disappointment - esp with the winner! All that time to find the person with the least amount of personality/entertainment value...just more proof these 'reality shows' are fixed.

I did enjoy Project Runway - glad Seth Aaron won. Also glad to see the top three designers in their or close to their 40's - there is hope for us old folks!

This season of ABDC was pretty good - though I was rooting for the runner up. Blueprint brought something a little newer to the stage but at least it was a West Coast Crew that won.

I have been working on new cartoon ideas for some hollywood types - still in the 'working' phase - so cross your fingers that something will come of all that effort! Lots of character design and heartache...ugh...

I have been working on other creative outlets ie: Greeting cards, t-shirts, calenders and all that fun stuff.

I actually got contacted by a new online gay magazine to potentially create strips for them on a regular basis but they decided to go with someone else = :*(

Oh well - keep trying!

But here's some good news: I've written the next few sets of strips so hopefully I can resume that by June - in fact - I'll vow to get a new strip by 06/03/10 - stay tuned!

Father's Day Approaches

Hello fans old and new:

LRC plans to return next week - cross your fingers - I've been jotting down stories so I hope to make time and resume this wonderful project.

Since the main characters are kids I figured to pay an homage to all the gay parents out there! I will probably touch on that as the strip continues so I hope that will bring more dimension to what I want LRC to be. If any GLBT parents out there want to share some stories I'd love to hear it!

I know growing up in a mainstream family has issues all its own - kids can be ridiculed for their awkward straight parents - having gay parents might be a lot of ammunition and cause more stress to children in a same-sex parent household - so congratulate any GLBT parents out there for having the courage to be OUT and integrating in a potentially unforgiving community.

When I get a chance I also do work on a very cool site: Greeting Card Universe.You can find all kinds of cards there - people make cards for things cards shouldn't be made for but....here's a few cards for Fathers Day in case you needed some ideas - enjoy!

When I was growing up I remember playing with the neighborhood kids and going around saying who we wanted to marry. Before my turn one boy mentioned Farrah Fawcett - so I picked Jacqueline Smith - but I really wanted to marry Lee Majors.

Hello Fans: I'm sorry I didn't get to a new strip this week- other artistic pursuits (and regular work) got in the way. Was a bit tired from my weekend last weekend with the hubby but we had a good time so I guess it's all right.

I decided to give you a 'teaser' or hint about things to come. Calvin and Hobbes gave us 'Stupendous Man' so LRC will give you 'Little Rainbow League' aka: Dr. Zappo , Tuff Girl and Captain Fabulous - new champions of GLBT rights (what kid wasn't fascinated with this modern mythology?)

Lots of ideas for villains that they (and their friends) will have to face - saving the world won't be easy!

I hope to get back to LRC soon - I have to take some legals steps to protect LRC, other art projects and work (that actually pays me) so LRC may be on a short hiatus - my apologies - but something has to suffer - please come back!

The heroes will probably evolve as time goes on - they don't have super powers - just regular folks fighting crime - they'll all have the gadget belts that a lot of heroes have so I forgot to put that on Tuff Girl and Captain Fabulous.

Thank you so much for your patience! It's been a strange week - was excited about going to Comic Con then that fell through - sigh - c'est la vie - at least I can continue my work...

Messages of hate can cause depression, low self esteem, suicidal thoughts...yet no one addresses that issue. Gay adults don't magically appear - we were gay children and while as an adult I can easily dismiss hateful comments - I'm hoping the younger GLBT generations will not be so intimidated in their formative years.

Hello Fans! Thank you so much for following LRC - I do appreciate all of you. Unfortunately work, family events and plain old life interferes with the creative processes. For those of us in the US - we just had the Long Labor Day weekend - and while I do LOVE the time off - it makes the short work week that much harder sometimes - you have 4 days to do 5 days of work and I am a little tired. A potential paying art gig looms - though it has nothing to do with cartooning - strange - but hopefully a fun adventure. Got a 5 year old birthday party to attend so that will be fun. The hubby isn't feeling well but with luck a little TLC will clear that up.

All that said and done - I may not be able to complete a strip this week - though I have the next couple sketched out - fret not - LRC will return and I am hoping to have a lot of fun having the kids go to Pride in West Jollywood.

I'd like to make this a 'Shameless Self-Promomtion Weekend' for all the artists, photographers, poets, writers, musicians etc. Feel free to post a friend's site especially (but not necessarily) if they are part of the GLBT community. I would like to help spread the work of other budding artists.

Little Rainbow Comics pays tribute to all those who have been singled out, ridiculed and otherwise suffered for being differnt. Recently there has also been much talk and outreach by the 'It Gets Better' campaign but as I sat down to draw this message I realized that message comes from GLBT people who have 'been there' & 'done that' and the characters of LRC have yet to have those experiences so I decided to put a spin on 'It Gets Better' from the point of view of someone young who has yet to embark on their journey.

Part of the Mission of LRC is to open people's eyes on what it is like to grow up gay. Gay people aren't born 21 years old - we started out as gay children and the issues we face coming to terms with who we are can be terrible.

Even though I didn't have the physical trauma of being beat up for being gay in school I was still made fun of and I remember the painful stress of the mocking. While I am 'out' for the most part it is still a nerve wracking experience when meeting new people or starting a new job - I just never know how people will react to what I am.

The thing that people don't understand is that the insecurities don't stop with 'coming out' to yourself or your family; it is always waiting with every new environment and it is just like being on the school playground all over again.

Please don't be afraid to educate the people in your life because that is the way we can change the world.

So I've decided to start featuring other artists' cards on the LRC Blog.

This is part of the 'Online Carnival'. Since it is summer we're to blog about summer things. It's a bit hard to schedule the LRC storylines with GCU events so I'll include a blurb about the Carnival Topic in a section now called:

Get to Know the Artist

Summer in So Cal is usually great. Back in the day I was an avid beach volleyball player; Sinjin Smith and Randy Stoklos were my idols! Nothing better than a day on the beach gettin' dirty! Now as much time as I spent on the beach - years in fact - very little of it was in the water. I can swim but I was always leary about jellyfish, riptides and God knows what is in the water off of Los Angeles - I'm not the best swimmer so I pretty much just waded in to my knees and went back to the court. I did go to Hawaii once and did manage get the hang of snorkelling - I think I drank half the lagoon - but once I got the hang of it - it was awesome! Now I swam in a very enclosed place, a large reef kept large critters out of the area and it was great to see the multi colored reef fish. Actually got to swim with a sea turtle - that was cool!

Now that I'm thinking about it - I better take advantage of having so many beaches nearby! The new summer resolution!

The Stonewall uprising was on 06/28/69. It is easy to forget how bad things were for the GLBT community here in the United States. Please remember those of us who live in places that are far worse than we ever had it here. 'Gay Power' was the chant used during the six night riots to rally the community against the oppressive majority.

Well it’s been a very exhausting couple of weeks. The new job has had a very long project (that is still in the works) and that has lead to a very long work day for me. Not used to that anymore. Keep in mind I haven’t been working a full work day since January of this year and now that I’m back to working full time hours (plus a little more) I find myself a bit numb mentally after work.

But it’s all good and I’m just glad to be working so I guess I can’t complain other than it cuts into my creative time! That being said I have a fun announcement for Little Rainbow Comics:

That (and other art projects) has been what’s distracting me from the weekly web comic. The calendar also features various dates through the year that reflect GLBT and/or Pop Culture events. The events are highlighted with a set of rainbow rings. I tried my best to get the dates correct, trying to confirm them through multiple sources on the web ie: Harvey Milk Day, 1^st Ever GLBT Center opening, DADT repeal Date, etc.

I wanted at least two events in each month – some months are more active than others- and I wanted it to be both fun and educational – much like LRC.

With this now behind me I hope to get back to the drawing board and start completing LRC’s 1^st compilation book- thanks so much for your patience!

Hello! So this week got away from me and I didn't get to a new strip...very busy weekend last weekend, a few errands during the week, phone conversations with the Hollywood types, and of course: the New (and last) Harry Potter film opens so poor time management on LRC's part.

BUT I did find time to do an LRC spoof on our favorite wizarding trio:

And I got a SHOCK today - there is a mug sale on Zazzle and I submitted these images on a mug and was told: 'We can't have this on our site as it infinges on other people's intellectual property'. Which I can understand BUT that will probably mean a lot of the work I did for the 2012 LRC calendar won't be allowed either - so screwed! Now I have to come up with plan B...oh boy!

So I must say I think of my work as just this cute/fun little web comic (I like the term more than 'strip') that can bring a smile to someone's face and hopefully make the reader think in ways they wouldn't normally about the subject. A few fans have shared some very surprising things about how LRC makes them feel and I didn't think my work would effect people the way it has so it reminds me how important these little things can be and how profoundly it can touch someone's life.

Cindy is a fellow artist on Greeting Card Universe and that is how we found out about each other's work. Her words have inspired me that 'just a little thing' can mean a lot to someone.

"Inspiration Can Come When and Where You Least Expect It."

I’m honored to write a guest post here at Little Rainbow Comics, and since Robert usually focuses on comics, I’ll try to keep this short and light-hearted.

Robert is an inspiration to me. I found his blog a couple months ago through GreetingCardUniverse.com where we both create cards. His cards are funnier than mine…so I’m using him as motivation in striving to reach my own funny spot, too… lol. But more importantly, he inspires me with his trail-blazing courage by creating comics that bring delightful charm and humor to a subject that was taboo not that long ago—growing up gay.

I’m not gay but I’ve lived with a different challenge for years that I feared and didn’t want to deal with: chemo brain--following cancer treatments in 1999. My self-confidence over the years has been sliced and diced, but seeing Robert bravely tackle social and cultural issues has given me hope.

Sure, fearing forgetfulness seems ridiculous (everybody forgets things, right?), and “chemo brain” probably sounds like a funny name for a disorder--but feeling like you’re losing your mind can only go so far in providing fodder for cartoons (ha!).

The point I’m trying to make is this: when I saw Robert’s sweet cartoons and the antics of Zack, Stan & Denisha, I was motivated to take a new look at my chemo brain-fog struggles and I was able to write an article describing what I’m going through and bring it to light. To take the point even further, Robert is my personal hero; because while I was doing research for my chemo brain-fog article (that I would not have written had I not been inspired by Robert’s work), I discovered that A.D.D. medication might help.

My doctor had never heard of that sort of treatment for chemo brain, but he prescribed it for me almost two weeks ago anyhow, at my request; and it is helping.

So this is my heartfelt thank you, Robert. Without your inspiration, I wouldn’t have had these recent successes in dealing with my own struggles. And on that note, I’d like to share some inspiring cards. :-)

This next artist is probably one of the more successful on GCU and a driving force behind the scenes - in fact I wouldn't be posting these spots if it wasn't for her so she is very much involved with developing the artistic communities.

Her online store has over 8000 greeting cards and she opened hers in 2007. I opened mine in 2009 and I just barely broke the 200 card mark so I better get my as* in grear! What drew me to her work is that she is also a cartoonist - no offense to the photographers out there but I think in many ways we work way harder on our stuff - and she has such a fun and whimsical style. On top of all the different artistic pursuits she finds time for her partner - not sure how she does it!

Corrie Kuipers: Rainbow Connections

In 1998, I met my perfect partner in an on-line group: Nene Adams (in the Minnie Hat), a published novelist, writer of lesbian mysteries and other award-winning stuff. We were head over heels in love, but one tiny problem stood between us.

I’m Dutch born and bred, living in the same village in the Netherlands all my life. And Nene lived in Florida.

The Atlantic Ocean doesn’t seem like a great distance until you try to bridge the gap with phone calls (the bills almost bankrupted us) and emails. But 4,500+ miles of seawater didn’t stop Nene from making a decision that would affect both our lives - she quit her job, upped stakes and moved to my country…and we’ve lived together happily ever since.

We make a good team. Nene’s the writer, I’m the artist. Together we’ve been creating original greeting cards (including GLBT themed cards for gay/lesbian weddings and GLBT support, etc.) on Greeting Card Universe almost since the business’ founding. And we also have other on-line stores like Zazzle, CafePress and RedBubble. It’s a living - not always a great one, but we have the freedom to create and express ourselves as we please.

Taking courage in our hands, we made our own personal rainbow connection, reaching out from two continents across an ocean to love each other. Now we live together, through good times and not-so-good times…and we never fail to find a reason to smile.

I will be honest and say I am partial to cartoonists when browsing through the selection of cards no matter where I am so of course when I see some cool images that are probably drawn with a gay hand - I must take note! I contacted Clark first through email via Greeting Card Universe and then through Facebook. In addition to being very talented with a great sense of humor he has a certain sweet/sexy cave man look that - I must say- works really well for him! He was very eager to do the guest spot but didn't know where to begin and seemed frazzled like a puppy with too many toys. He managed to reign in his enthusiasm and give a nice note about himself and his work - thanks for sharing!

Being 'Naughty' in Washington DC

I was very young I'd say about 6 or 7 when I realized I was different....I don't think the whole GAY thing hit me until I was 11ish....but TOTAL honesty with me about me didn't hit until my late 30's!!! LOL and I don't think I ever really told anyone, gay just happened! (He's 45 now)

I've been drawing for as long as I can remember. In 6th grade the boys in my class used to give me their lunch money if I'd draw naked women for them....silly boys, I really had no idea what the hell I was drawing but I did it anyway! I loved to draw, began copying style from other artistic students in my classes, books and TV, a little bit of this style a little bit of that one....creativity builds on itself and what we can collect from others helps!

I believe my work has been most inspired by Hanna-Barbera, I was a HUGE Flinstones fan, I absolutely love humorous art, exaggerated features etc.

So I learned of Adam and his work in a bit of a round about way but I think it’s a fun story.

Last year after watching Project Runway Season 8 I was very enamored by contestant Peach Carr - not sure why but every gay man who watches the show loves her too. She is affectionately dubbed ‘the Fairy Drag Mother’. So I found her on Facebook and after a few comments on her page she thought I was funny - responding to my messages/comments -she even became a fan of Little Rainbow Comics AND asked where she might purchase my book ( not yet - better get my act together) - I was like ‘WOW - someone from Project Runway is actually taking notice of me and my work!’ I was giddy for a week!

So Adam is a fan of Peach (they actually have lunch together regularly - lucky dog) and I saw her comment on one of his paintings. I was so taken by the detail of it - really amazing work - Lord knows I don’t have that kind of patience - and that’s how I discovered this gifted person who’s talent showcases his love for nature and animals. I would say he’s probably one of the warmest and friendliest souls that I’ve come across - a serendipitous moment when this social networking really works - ever have that happen? Adam just opened his store on Greeting Card Universe - didn’t expect that but I’m very happy I inspired him to share his work in this way.

All I can say is: Thank You Project Runway - if it wasn’t for that show I may never have come across this amazing artist...

Journey to the Red Tree

Robert has been one of my favorite Facebook friends and I am so flattered that he wanted me to be a guest blogger. How could I refuse someone that is so sweet and kind? His comics and cards are as much fun as he is.

I started painting about 6 years ago focusing on trees and clouds. I had been selling consistently in an emerging artist gallery and had one painting that I loved that for some reason wouldn’t sell. According to my mentor at the time, it was too busy and people love simple images and ideas. At that moment a little red tree popped into my mind and the Red Tree was born. I started painting all different landscapes with on single red tree in the composition. This symbol took on a life of it’s own and I became the red tree painter.

This is the message I was receiving from my paintings: Each of us is on a journey – whether for love, career, family or spiritual growth. As we journey, each of us searches for encouragement along the way. The Red Tree paintings seek to provide that encouragement and inspiration. The images reflect strong attachment to personal beliefs, aspirations toward goals, and staunch stability of purpose often in a wilderness of distractions. The Red Tree series evokes images of hope and promise and unwavering determination.

A few years ago, I got an agent to promote my Red Tree series to publishers. After many submissions, my agent told me that all of his attempts were declined and the series would not be licensed. I am not sure if he didn’t sell these images with the inspirational messages or if the publishers were just looking for brown and gold landscapes, but my break-though idea and legacy was dead.

Today, I live in rural Michigan with my hubby-to-be, waiting for Michigan to pass Gay Marriage. I paint in the basement and if I need any inspiration, I just walk outside and I am in the woods on the St. Joe River. Since meeting Jim and moving in together, my new work has taken a new direction with whimsical themes. They all speak to the viewer about the pursuit of happiness and prosperity…that I have finally, after 40 years, found.

I am so excited that Robert has introduced me to GreetingCardUniverse.com. Now I am going to promote my paintings through this site. In this tuff economy, art sales are not what they use to be and artists need new ways to pay the bills and promote their brand. I hope that my store catches on and maybe, someday, Halmark will be calling me directly!

Writer's Spotlight: John Paul Godges

So I’ve known John for awhile now and it has been a fun adventure! To give you some perspective I came out in 1993 and in 1994 I was with my team in New York for the Gay Games which is where/when this picture was taken. I was young, gay and clueless as to where to meet people; the internet wasn’t so prominent back then. I answered a newspaper ad (remember those?) and the guy told me about the Gay and Lesbian Sports Alliance of Los Angeles which lead me to VOILA (the Volleyball Organization in Los Angeles). John was one of the many sweet/intelligent and giving gay v-ball players to take me under his wing. Approaching twenty years later the team still gets together - more for dinner than volleyball - but it's wonderful we still take the time to see each other. Always the artist I studied novel and short story fiction writing and when John finished his original (non-fiction) manuscript I was able to give him a bit of advice that he was grateful for and I am honored to be part of his final work.

John Paul Godges: Oh Beautiful

Robert read an early draft of my family memoir and suggested some terrific improvements. With his help and that of others, the book has gone from something borderline embarrassing to something that seems to be touching many hearts—gay, straight, and otherwise—by showing what we all have in common.

The inspiration for the book, called Oh, Beautiful: An American Family in the 20th Century, was my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Both my parents came from immigrant backgrounds. The story portrays the immigration and assimilation experience in America as something we all experience. We all struggle to find where we belong in this ever-changing American society.

That experience applies to lesbian and gay people in a big way. The struggles of lesbian and gay kids to find their places in their own biological families represent extreme cases of people who have no choice but to seek where they might fit in to America. It’s just as important as ever to help people understand what it’s like to grow up gay in society and how all of society suffers because of it.

This drama plays out loud and proud in my family story, beginning with yours truly. It was important for me to share how difficult this journey can be, because a lot of people are still afraid to talk about it, and it was even more important to show how lesbian and gay people can come through it all and find their places as indispensable members of the American family. Now that’s the kind of beauty that makes America great!

Greeting Card Carnival: I guess Halloween is coming soon and we're assigned to blog about ghosts...well I've never seen one though from what I understand they don't appear to be the spectral glowing images that Hollywood makes them out to be. I'm told they look just like regular people. One incident happened at a former place of employment. A co-worker said she walked through the living room/lobby area and saw a man sitting at a table. She smiled at him and he smiled back but being in a hurry she didn't stop to converse. On the way back she made it a point to introduce herself but the man was gone. No one else had seen him and the receptionist confirmed that no man had entered the building. The place is said to be haunted so I guess I'm glad I don't work there any more...

I'm a little bummed about this week. It is actually the 2nd Anniversary for Little Rainbow Comics and I should've done something special for that but I forgot...can you believe it? LRC launched 09/03/09 so these kids have been around for a couple of years now.

I started a new job last week and I've also been working on other artistic pursuits so it's no wonder that I can't seem to concentrate on LRC as I'd like. Working on a 2012 calendar for LRC so all is not lost. ANYWAY - thank you so much for following along on this crazy wacky adventure...more to come for sure!

On a Mission

So about two weeks ago I discovered the 2011 Tony Award performance of the new Broadway show 'Book of Mormon : I Believe' and I've been OBSESSED with that show ever since. I purchased the cast recording on iTunes and have pretty much been listening to it non-stop hence the image you see.

Is it in poor taste? I'm debating on making it the cover of the book whenever it gets completed...hopefully the 'Book of Mormon' people won't be too upset with me.

I apologize for no new web comic. I do have strips written but I need to gather my notes and ideas to better move forward. I am feeling like I'm just running with no plan so that needs to stop. I'm not doing dailies, there are no deadlines other than the ones I put on myself but rather than adhering to a weekly due date with half-ass work I'd rather post quality work when it decides to manifest.

Right now I am designing a 2012 LRC calendar complete with various dates marked throughout the year that have some significance to LGBT history and/or pop culture. Hopefully I can unveil that soon. I also need to collect all the images and background stories I have that I want to include in LRC's first collection. I intend to include never before seen strips...

Things have been busy in my work life as well. I started a new job and that has been a bit wearing but very fun. I enjoy my new position and my new boss is a HOOT. This is an industry I've never worked in and being gay I wasn't sure I was a good fit. When I walked into the interview, Patrick is this big bear of a man, deep voice and all these military awards on his wall. But we hit it off and I was offered the job. I was afraid to tell him about me being gay but as we (Patrick, Nancy (his wife), Jill (marketing) and myself) sat talking and taking a break - Patrick mentions he'd like to do more charity work for the homeless and...wait for it...the LGBT community. I almost laughed out loud - Really? Did this big military man just say 'LGBT'??

So it turns out one of Patrick's closest friends was gay - (was - he passed away from cancer about two years ago - sad) - I came out right then and there and all of them said 'Oh, it's no problem at all...' WHEW!

See? Coming out isn't just once...every new situation or new person you meet is a 'coming out' opportunity which we must make a choice to disclose or not...what do you choose?

I'm also helping some friends with a website - so if anyone in the LA area needs a Santa Claus this Holiday Season...I can hook you up!

Gay Days 2011: Disneyland

So last week was Gay Days at Disneyland

If you’re not familiar with that it’s when gays of all kinds descend on the Magic Kingdom to frolic around with Mickey and Friends. This is always the 1st Saturday in October and the one day has turned into an entire weekend. One criteria (not mandatory) is that everyone is asked to wear a red shirt just so the visibility is there and it is a great feeling as you walk around the Parks and see a sea of red.

We did the normal things you do at Disneyland: Rode rides, ate, drank, saw a few shows, saw the parade...FORGOT Star Tours launched a new version earlier this year so missed that entirely...it really is impossible to do everything at Disneyland in one day.

It was fun to play catch up with old friends and they reminded me of a very special time of day: The Flag Retreat. A few hours before sunset there is a small ceremony to bring down the flag, fold it and ‘retire’ it for the day. The Disneyland Marching Band comes down Main Street towards Town Square. The Dapper Dans sing and an Honor Guard comes out to take care of ‘Old Glory’. In the central garden area there is an inner circular walkway and in that circle stands the flag pole. The performers stand inside the circular walk way. All others are asked to stand outside the circle and watch the ceremony looking in. Now here’s where it gets cool...

During the ceremony Disneyland asks any service members in attendance to come forth stand inside the central walkway- usually at attention as the flag is put down for the night. Each branch of the military is called separately: Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard, etc. What is great this particular day, the first Gay Days after DADT ended, was that the LGBT service members (in red) stand with their fellow military members. It was so awesome to see - I just wish the event was publicized more and I think we would’ve seen a lot more red shirts...

All in all a great day at the Magic Kingdom...hope to see you there next year!!

Twisted Rainbows: It's Halloween!

Hey folks! It’s that time of year when ghosts and ghouls like to frolic in the streets!

I always loved Halloween - dressing up and being someone else for a night (or couple of nights) and seeing what everyone else has done is always a great time.

The side of Halloween I enjoy is more fun and fabulous rather than the ghastly horror show that for the most part dominates this time of year. I hate being scared. Don’t like watching scary movies. I can watch crocodiles ripping apart zebras on the Discovery Channel with morbid fascination but I can’t handle watching some maniac hack apart someone in a dark alley. I really don’t like movies about the devil - just creeps me out way too much.

Halloween for me is about having fun - not being terrified! I was very grateful in 2005 when Disneyland opted to start doing a more ‘Family Friendly’ Halloween celebration. You could actually go to the Park and walk around in costume! Lots of happy times rather than having monsters jump out at you in a haunted maze...

Big fan of Tim Burton's : The Nightmare Before Christmas so here's my homage to that...

Comic Con: Long Beach 2011

So Long Beach con was great - had lots of fun over the Halloween weekend and it’s always fun to immerse myself in the comic book world. I volunteered at the Prism Comics booth for the first time and it felt good to ‘represent’.

Comic-wise the big thing I found was the relaunch of the ‘Batgirl’ storyline. Now if you’re familiar with comics at all you will know that the original Batgirl was forced into retirement in a book called ‘the Killing Joke’ back in 1988. Barbra Gordon was shot by the Joker. Shot as a civilian not in costume. As a result she was paralyzed from the waist down and became the computer guru ‘Oracle’. Since then the mantle of ‘Batgirl’ has been assumed by one new heroine after another yet they all seemed to fall by the wayside.

When I saw this first issue I was like ‘Oh, they found a new Batgirl and being the big Batgirl fan I picked up issues 1 & 2. So while waiting for a panel discussion I started reading it and almost fell out of my chair! The new Batgirl is...well the Original Batgirl! Barbara Gordon is back! The writing is excellent and I also love the art. What I laugh about are comments like ‘I was in that chair for three years...’ Excuse me, Three Years? It was 1988 Oh well - I know comic time doesn’t follow real world time. The biggest concern was how she is able to walk again. I know DC Comics has re-vamped their universe (yet again) but Barbara only mentions ‘A miracle’ happened and as far as I know - nothing has been said as to how she regained the use of her legs...and can suddenly fight and swing around Gotham as if nothing ever happened.

I was a little concerned about this ‘miracle’ - why on earth would they have Barbara walking again? Then I heard a rumor on the radio today: Barbara Gordon may appear in the next Batman film. Note I say Babs not Batgirl. Rumors are flying that Ellen Paige (Juno) will be playing Commissioner Gordon’s daughter next summer. So DC Comics can’t have Barbara in a wheelchair if she’s walking on the silver screen and more than likely donning cape and cowl so they had to re-boot Barbara’s history. Keep an eye on that one...

Wonder-Con which is normally up in San Francisco in April is going to be here in Anaheim next year So come March I get to attend Wonder-Con for the first time.

Now this was a very fun convention and seemed much more an ‘entertainment’ convention as opposed to a ‘comic convention’. Lots of movies, toys, games and a lot of celebrities. Morgan Fairchild had a table, Erin Gray was there, ‘Boomer’ from the original Battlestar Galactica...what the hell are all these ‘has beens’ doing here?? Just kidding...for whatever reason old stars like to hang out at cons...I've never been 'star struck' by anyone there.

Not a lot of ‘gay’ stuff at Comikaze but hopefully as it grows the GLBT community will make its presence more known.

The fun thing I found here was: Real life Super Heroes. Regular folks all around the country donning capes and costumes to ‘fight crime’ or do community outreach. Some of these home grown heroes actually go out to crime ridden areas and try to expose drug dealers, patrol for criminals or assist those in need. It is a growing movement which is both inspiring and terrifying. Seriously - you guys go out and (almost) look for trouble? Not all do that - in fact the mission of some groups is to do charity work, visit sick kids in the hospital (see video below) or help with the homeless - most times all out of their own pocket - it really is a great thing.(And most of them seem gay...at least my gay-dar seems to get signals from most). The documentary is very well done and takes a closer look at this growing phenomenon: RLSH (Real Life Super Heroes). Marvel creator Stan-Lee even gives his opinion on these emerging heroes. So what would your super-persona be?

LRC news: Still writing strips - I would like to get the majority of what I want written before I start drawing. I wish I could say my book will be ready by Bent-Con 12/3/2011 - and I could but I just don’t have enough content. I could have something ready for sure but it’s just not what I want my first collection to be. Had I known about BENT Con earlier I probably would’ve devoted more time to getting my collection together but I didn’t find out about it until September so rather than rush to get something I’m not loving out the door. I will set a new goal for Wonder-Con (Anaheim) in March 2012. Stay tooned and thanks for being a fan!

Bent Con 2011

Not sure why this hasn't caught on sooner but Bent-Con 2011 was a blast! Being a comic fan for so many years and going to various conventions I always thought the gay presence was very prevelant in the people walking around those sacred halls and to make an event that specialized in gay interest, not just in comics but many forms of enterainment, all I can say is: It's about time!

This was the second year that Bent-Con spread its wings. Last year it was a free event with about 400 attendees in a modest donated space. This year it was a paid event, became a legal non-profit organization, boasted over 1900 attendees and located in a fancy hotel in downtown Los Angeles. (Granted it was the basement but hey - quite a splendid venue!) Let's hope Bent-Con keeps growing.

As an artist it was great to see other people's work and immerse myself in all the creative energy. Not just comic artist but there were also actors, costume designers, make up artists, musicians, gamers, movie makers, web series producers...for those of you wanting to share your work with like minded individuals this is the place!

What I may suggest in the future is to emphasize cartoons, film, webisodes, etc. a bit more. A little film festival may be cool - call for submissions throughout the year and have a showing during the Con. Maybe the people at Logo would allow us to screen something...even be a test audience for a new show? Ru-Paul's Drag Race usually starts in January...wouldn't it be cool if Bent-Con were to show something from the upcoming season...? And how about a venue in a more 'gay' area - West Hollywood or Long Beach? Though the Westin Bonaventure was FABULOUS...

I didn't have my own booth but I was able to showcase some of my work at the Prism Comics booth and sold a few calendars - YES - so that was a nice ego boost for my work! So I figured to capitalize on the Super Bowl Madness and have the kids of LRC dress up in stylized uniforms of the Pats and Giants. On my Facebook Fan Page I'm going to have my fans 'like' the team they want to see win and if you don't want either team to win 'like' Zack's image. Let's see who will take home the championship! What's on the horizon for LRC: I wanted to have a book together in time for Wonder Con in March but I'm struggling with writing and getting frustrated creatively. I don't want my first book to be a half-ass effort just to 'get something done' so I figure to not stress out and let the energy flow when it will.

What is coming out of me right now is a bunch of new greeting cards. This Christmas was a great season for sales (over 200 sold - thank you if you bought any) and that's A LOT for me. I think my mind may be tired of thinking of LRC and wants to express itself in different way hence the sudden output of greeting cards - go with the artistic flow!

Now my good friends at Greeting Card Universe (GCU) are having a contest: Help a friend. We are to pick another artist to spotlight and blog about our favorite card in their store. So here it is:

I LOVE artist Makiko Kimura. I've bought many of her cards since I discovered GCU. She's got a very charming style and has a great gift for small furry animals - usually teddy bears - but all kinds of fuzzy love seems to leap out of her creative mind. I will assume the images are water colors but I guess it could be awesome photoshopping. That being said here's (one ) of my favorite cards that Makiko designed:
